Measures of planning, prospection, inhibition, crystallized intelligence, and fluid intelligence were collected in an individual differences study. Thus, the current study examined prospection (i.e., the ability to remember to carry out a future intention), executive functioning, and intelligence markers as predictors of performance in this widely used naturalistic planning task in 56 children aged 7- to 12-years-old. Finally, the work of citizen scientists taking part in Galaxy Zoo points to a future where machine learning and humans both contribute to systems capable of analyzing extremely large data sets.Ĭhildren's planning performance in the Zoo Map task (BADS-C): Is it driven by general cognitive ability, executive functioning, or prospection?īallhausen, Nicola Mahy, Caitlin E V Hering, Alexandra Voigt, Babett Schnitzspahn, Katharina M Lagner, Prune Ihle, Andreas Kliegel, MatthiasĪ minimal amount of research has examined the cognitive predictors of children's performance in naturalistic, errand-type planning tasks such as the Zoo Map task of the Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome for Children (BADS-C). Citizen scientists also discovered unusual objects in public data, such as "Hanny's Voorwerp", a quasar light echo which can constrain black hole accretion on timescales of 10-100 kyr. With the he help of over a quarter million citizen scientists, we were able to map out the evolution of galaxy populations from star formation to quiescence and how this "quenching" is related to changes in morphology. The Galaxy Zoo tapped into the incredible desire of the public to get involved in and contribute to scientific research. When the Galaxy Zoo website calling for citizen scientists around the world to help classify galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey was launched, it brought down the servers hosting the images. Overall, our findings indicate that the Zoo Map Test is a valid indicator of planning ability in a heterogeneous patient sample. One exception to this was the total time, which was associated with processing speed. Planning was the strongest predictor of the total raw score and inappropriate places visited, and no additional contribution of other cognitive scores was found. In addition to the Zoo Map Test, the patients completed other neuropsychological tests of planning, inhibition, processing speed, and episodic memory. To address this important issue, we examined whether planning is still the most important predictor of Zoo Map performance in a heterogeneous sample of neurologic and psychiatric outpatients (N = 71). Successful performance on this test is, however, dependent on various cognitive functions, and deficient Zoo Map performance does therefore not necessarily imply selectively disrupted planning abilities. The Zoo Map Test of the Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome battery is often applied to measure planning ability as part of executive function. Oosterman, Joukje M Wijers, Marijn Kessels, Roy P C This was very interesting to see science implemented in such a real-world setting! This experience gave me insight on just how much science has helped us understand the world we live in, and that those processes are still very much in practice.Planning or something else? Examining neuropsychological predictors of Zoo Map performance. He also shared breeding strategies the aquarium was utilizing. The tour guide explained aquarium maintenance, fish behavior, and ongoing research that the zoo is conducting in the aquarium. The tour explored everything from feeding the fish, to quarantine tanks for sick fish, to the multi-thousand gallon Discovery Reef tank. I went on a tour of the Discovery Reef exhibit there, part of their aquarium. ![]() We spent the day at the Zoo, and had the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the exhibits. This past weekend, the Biological Sciences Scholars and Health Sciences Scholars went on a trip to the Columbus Zoo. ![]() M y roommate, Eva, and I are pictured here with Manny the Manatee.
